Common Questions and FAQs

Homeowners insurance typically covers your dwelling, other structures, personal property, personal liability, med pay, and loss of use for covered causes of loss.

You should have enough coverage to rebuild your home if destroyed.  With rapid inflation, the cost to rebuild your home may have doubled or tripled in the past 10 years.  Your agent can help determine an accurate price per square foot for today’s market condition.

Many personal lines policies offer riders or endorsements to their policy.  Where applicable, these are illustrated under the coverage section of each coverage line.

Location, age, and type of building will influence your homeowner’s premium.

Floods and earthquakes are excluded causes of loss.  To protect against these exposures, a separate policy would need to be purchased.

This coverage protects you if you are responsible for damage to property or injury to others.  It extends to other members of your household.  If your kid accidentally breaks a neighbor’s window, it means that your policy will still respond.

If you remodel your home or dwelling, your property value may increase.  This will raise the limit of insurance you need and will affect pricing.  You will want to notify your agent if you have any recently completed renovations.

There are many discounts available!  Each carrier has its own set of discounts which may be similar or different from another.  Examples of discounts are listed on each coverage landing page.

The first step is to file a claim with Wilson Insurance or call the company’s 800 number found on the DEC page of your insurance policy.  Your insurance carrier will assign your claim to an adjuster who will contact you to investigate the claim.

Certain markets have aversions to dog breeds.  They may decline coverage or add debit to offset claims.  Dog breeds that may be harder to insure are Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, any wolf breeds, Chow chows, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Siberian Huskies.

To determine the value of your personal property, calculate what it would cost to replace your items with new ones of similar kind and quality. Then subtract the depreciation.
