Each company has different risk tolerances but in general, pre-existing medical conditions, pregnancy, death, bilateral conditions, certain bilateral conditions, preventable diseases, breed exclusions, and possibly age restrictions.

Generally, pre-existing conditions are not covered.  Some companies have tolerance for ‘curable’ pre-existing conditions such as an ear infection on condition they have been symptom-free for a period of time.  The best way to avoid denial of coverage is to proactively establish coverage before symptoms manifest.

Your veterinarian may require your pet’s medical records or determine during a medical examination that a pre-existing condition existed.  If your fur baby’s breed is known to struggle with breed-specific coverage, it is best to obtain and maintain coverage before symptoms arise.
